Aims and Scope of the School

The aim of this IBRO-UM5 Advanced School is to get basic and advanced notions on neuroimmunology and neuroinfections.

Description

We propose the Educational Course “Neuroimmunology and Brain Infections”, to be held in Rabat, Morocco, from November 21st to December 4th, 2017. The main aim of the course will be to provide students with tools to develop their own research activities in the field of neuroimmunology and neuroinfections. The school will have 20-24 students from all over Africa, including sub-Saharan nations, that will be selected based on their applications. Applications will include their CV and a short paragraph where applicants will be invited to expose what in their mind is the most relevant scientific or medical question, representing their most important learning need. The course will cover neuroimmunology and infections of the central and peripheral nervous system. Lessons will start from basic concepts, including some hints of nervous system anatomy and physiology, and provide a common background to be used to understand more specific lessons on clinical and scientific topics including immune-mediated and autoimmune disorders and infectious diseases common in Africa and for which clinical and research activities are more needed. The course will be extremely interactive, and the typical working day will include two or, at the most, three lectures along with debates and discussion on material produced by the attendants. In fact, pupils will be asked to elaborate very simple research projects and to analyze examples of current scientific literature. The results of these activities will then be discussed collectively with the faculty. Faculty members will be asked to stay as long as possible during the school to ensure the deepest possible interactions with the students. The proposed faculty will be fairly balanced in terms of European and African teachers. The course will end with some days of practical laboratory activities, to provide also some basic technical skills necessary to perform independent research. Students will inject LPS and record circadian rhythm, perform behavioral tests, immunohistochemistry to measure inflammatory markers.
